United Way Mascots

Does your United Way have a mascot? Do you offer something fun for kids to get them excited about United Way?

United Way of Wells County (Bluffton, Indiana) not only has one mascot, but TWO, and they are focused on an issue! I introduce to you: Blossom the Book Butterfly and Walter the Word Worm – United Way of Wells County’s reading mascots.

United Way of Wells County established a priority of ensuring all children are ready to enter Kindergarten and they are continually looking for ways to strengthen school readiness in all of their school districts. Walter and Blossom are part of their early childhood initiative and share their love of books and words, tips for learning, health, and having fun.

Walter and Blossom not only star in their own “Getting Ready for Kindergarten” calendar, which has activities and tips for parents and grandparents to interact with their children in a fun, learning environment, but they also have their very own Facebook page! Blossom the Book Butterfly loves to read books and shares what she is reading on their Facebook page, while Walter the Word Worm has a word of the day (with definition) that he uses and shares on their Facebook page.

When your issue is related to early childhood education, it’s important to make connections with families of young children. Having a mascot is a fun way to get kids excited about United Way and I especially love United Way of Wells County’s mascots because they are focused on an issue. By building relationships with families and children now and informing them of the issues you are focused on addressing, you will make connections that will last into the future.
